Brand Standards Guide: What It Is and Why Your Business Needs One
In today’s post we are going to discuss the importance of having a brand standards guide. If you haven’t heard of a brand standards guide before, consider this scenario…
You need to get some swag printed and when you place the order you upload the single .jpg logo file your original designer gave you. You then get an email from the printer asking if you have a .png version of your logo because the one you sent over has a white background that won’t work on the hats you are buying. Further, they tell you that the font you are using is a paid font and they need those files as well. Frustrated, you email your old designer and two days later he emails back saying he doesn’t have any of those files anymore.
Working with what they have, the printer just wings it and sends over a proof that looks absolutely terrible. At a loss, you just order 500 because you think something is better than nothing. When they arrive they look even worse in person than the online proof so you throw them in the storage room and pretend you never ordered them.
You may not have experienced this exact scenario, but chances are you have run across something very similar. It can be maddening.
A brand standards guide and logo package will eliminate that frustration. Just to define what we’re talking about here, a logo package is simply a digital file of your logo in various sizes, formats, and even colors (such as black and white).
A brand standards guide on the other hand, will give direction on how to use your brand elements…this could include which fonts to use, how big your logo should be depending on the context of the project, what color schemes to use, a listing of the color codes (RGB, Hex Codes, CMYK, and Pantone, etc.), and more.
With a well-written brand standards guide there is never any doubt about which elements to use in which context. This saves everyone time and hassle of going back and forth in communication, sending files over, recreating certain elements, etc.
